Key Note Regional Leads

This report is one of a series of comprehensive titles available from Key Note, each of which is designed to help you target or evaluate companies in a particular region of the UK or a particular industry sector. Businesses have relied upon these informative reports for many years for a variety of key business and marketing activities they undertake. With your selection from the range available, you too can benefit from the concise and precise information each report brings you.

The following are key frequently-asked questions. The answers should give you a greater insight into the content of each report you purchase.

Where does the information come from?

In compiling each report, Key Note's dedicated editorial team asks our database of comprehensive information pertinent questions on over 1.8 million limited British companies.

The prime source for the information is all relevant accounts and annual returns as well as other documents filed at Companies House. This information is evaluated, analysed and standardised. It is then supplemented and enhanced from a variety of other sources of information and additional analysis.

Address Information

A variety of comprehensive sources are used to bring you up-to-date addresses, telephone and fax numbers. These include leading telephone directory companies, post office address files, company reports, telephone research and more.

Contact Information

Key Note provides you with the most up-to-date details of company directors and company secretaries from Annual Returns and any subsequent change documents filed at Companies House. Directors' details are updated on Key Note's database every day.

Credit Score

Developed in association with CreditScorer Ltd, the score uses a propriety measuring system, matching each company to a dynamic set of indicators. Constant measurement of the performance of companies which have become insolvent is undertaken, and this is mapped to companies which are still actively trading. Indicators are varied and include company size, performance ratios, industry type and more. The score indicates the potential for a company to become insolvent within the next 12-months. Put simply, a score of 1 indicates a high risk of insolvency and 100 indicates a minimal risk of insolvency.

Turnover Range and Employee Number Range

Where companies do not disclose their turnover or employee numbers, an estimated range is provided for you. These estimates are calculated by comparing companies to those which do file turnovers and employee numbers in the same industry sector(s).

Principal Activity

Details of the main activities of each company are given. These are derived either from analysis of the company's description of its activities in its financial documents, or from the description of its main Standard Industry Classification (SIC) code.

Which companies are included?

The reports bring you marketing and financial information for limited British companies, registered at Companies House and actively trading in the area covered by the report.

Regions

Companies with their head office (trading address) in the postcode areas covered by the report.

Industries

Companies actively trading in the industry sector or sectors covered by the report, as defined by their analysed trading activity, main SIC code or company name.

Which companies are not included?

Some companies are excluded from the reports for the following reasons:

  • No accounts filed for over 2-years prior to publication of this report
  • Assets of less than £25,000
  • Accounts are not filed in GBP
  • Not a live trading company

What financial information is provided for each company?

Under the Companies Act 1981 and as amended by the Companies Act 1985 and 1989, UK disclosure laws were brought into line with the requirements of the EEC Fourth Directive on company accounts disclosure. The principal effect of this move in the UK has been to reduce the amount of information required for some companies in terms of disclosure of turnover and profits.

Where a company files such accounts, they are referred to as 'modified'. In Key Note Business Publication reports, where such modified accounts do not include turnover, alternative financial data is supplied (see earlier).

Small-sized companies

Those companies which satisfy any two of the following criteria for 2 or more consecutive years in the last 3, need only submit an abbreviated balance sheet with notes:

a) a turnover of less than £2.0 million
b) a balance sheet total not exceeding £975,000
c) an average number of employees less than or equal to 50

Medium-sized companies

Those companies which satisfy two or more of the following for 2 or more consecutive years in the last 3, must submit a balance sheet and profit & loss account, though this may be abbreviated and not include turnover:

a) a turnover of less than £8.0 million
b) a balance sheet total not exceeding £3.9 million
c) an average number of employees less than or equal to 250

These exemptions are not applicable to public companies, banking, insurance or shipping companies and companies (except dormant companies) which are members of a group which includes a public company, a corporate body which can offer its shares or debentures to the public, or a recognised bank, licensed institution or insurance company.

Did you know......?

That those reports which cover diverse industries or several postcode areas are subdivided into 'subsectors' for you? Effectively, this means you get several reports in one, each focused on a precise area for ease of reference.

Key Note provide 4 invaluable indexes. The Auditors Index details which companies are audited by which auditor. The Auditors Fees paid by each company are also given (where available). The Geographical Index lets you quickly see which companies are in which postcode area. The Industrial Category index places companies having the same primary SIC code together for you and the Alphabetical Index lets you quickly discover in which section of the report a company appears.
